During a recent lecture on the topic by a noted local historian at a gathering of dermatologists in Overland Park, hair removal was the topic of the day. However; it wasn’t science or technology that was being discussed. Rather; it was how various societies, and cultures have dealt with hair removal over the centuries. As a local reporter who was assigned to cover the event, I was thoroughly amazed by what was revealed about the topic.
Hair Removal in Rural Indian Societies
For instance, did you know that to this day, in some segments of Indian society widows are still required to shave their heads as a part of a social ostracization ritual? In fact, in some isolated rural areas, the custom which is now outlawed, is in fact practiced and enforced. He went on to explain that no one is quite sure how the custom evolved, or even why widows in these cultures face the level of social ostrasization that they do.
Here’s Something That You probably Didn’t Know
I was also surprised to learn that the practice of women in western societies, shaving their legs and armpits is a relatively new social trend. The fact is that up until the beginning of the 20th century, most women in western societies went their entire lives without ever once removing any hair from their bodies and this practice even survives to this day in many part of Europe, Asia and Latin America.
Hair Removal By Ancient Egyptians Was Discussed
However; in ancient Egypt the practice of hair removal from the bodies of both men and women was the social norm. It was done to prevent lice infestations, and not to do so was considered “unclean”. In fact, Egyptian priests shaved their entire bodies each and every day, so they could be seen to be clean and pure in the eyes of the many gods that were worshiped by the Egyptians.
